The Murder In The Neighborhood

Okay, so, basically now we know what happened. The woman killed was a druggie, her kid taken away to foster care. Crimes, you know, the works. The dude who allegedly killed her had been convicted of murder once already and had gotten out early. There are two more people involved, the wife of the killer and the brother-in-law of the victim. All criminals, druggies.

One druggie less, I say.

It's a strange January. It's a uphill-downhill ride with the temperatures. Tomorrow it will be something closer to zero (centigrade) and just today it was -21 (centig.). And the day after tomorrow it's supposed to be back to -20. It should be -20 the whole month through.  I'm glad there's lots and lots of snow.

I'm nervous about starting at my new job. I've been overlooked in so many interviews I've lost every bit of confidence I once had plenty of. I'm half expecting to be fired. Everyone's saying be positive, be positive.. well, I can't magic the effin positive from nothing. FFS.

Friday

Just As I Complained..

I got a job.

I'm not going to celebrate, though. Not until I've gone through at least three succesful days on the job. Or not until the first paycheck.

I don't know how much I'm going to earn. I only know that it depends on how many lessons I give. It can be something from €30-€2800/month. I hope it's closer to the latter.

I'm a teacher. And just a year ago I swore I won't enter another school. And this is worse: These are kids from 5-13 years.

I'm glad kids usually like me. I hope they like me 'cause I have no authority among kids. I'm practically a kid myself... I'm like Peter Pan without all the nutty talk. Well.. that's debateable.

I know what I'm going to buy first, though. A new graphics card. Or an external hard drive. And yes, I'm still a girl. I need a new GPU more than a pair of UGGs.

Winter Without Job

I'm so happy. It seems that we're getting a proper winter this year too! It's been snowing. Today it's about ten degrees below zero (centigrade) and it's been like this for a few weeks. The trees are covered in frost and everything seems mostly white. It's so pretty outside it makes me smile. I went for a walk the other day and noticed I was smiling the whole time I was out there. The walk was nice until yesterday when I noticed my sartorius is so stiff I can barely stand up straight. I guess it's the downside of never exercising.

Oh, a few weeks ago  I had this very strange fever attack. I was fine at six and was down with a 39,5 degrees (centigrade) fever by eight. I was so hurting everywhere, cold, hot - everything by ten in the evening I thought I was going to die. I took some pills and had the fever down by next morning. Since that fever I've felt like shit (or even shittier), headachy and nauseous..

I forgot to tell we gave up the bird, our agapornis. She didn't work well with us being by herself so we gave her to someone who had company for her. Since that I've felt I won't be taking any pets from this day on.

I'm still out of work.

Thursday

The Teach

I had a short streak of substitute teaching at the local business school. That week drained energy from me like a troupé of vampires. A killer week. The students were still in their teens, but hell, they were acting like we used to -  in pre school! All the swearing, teasing, it was hellish. Half the time I spent telling them off. Note, these were people who are supposed to enter real adult life next year, with work and responsibilities!

I'll never do that again. I'd rather live of J's money. Sorry, J.

Moral Responsibility of the Companies in Asia

So, the Chinese are stealing our jobs. Why? Because they are cheap. If they can have ten employees for the price of one in Sweden, that's where they're going. To maximise the profits of course.

Plus, China doesn't care about the environment, so their factories are pushing the same shit we're trying to get rid of. So instead of substituting more energy and environment efficient factories, companies move their production facilities to China. Nice work.

So, what should China and India do, then?

1. Demand education: If a mother is working in the factory, a factory nanny can take care of the children, so the children can play and not work at home or at some other place (like they do in India). Letting their children have at least the basic education is worth everything (at least future, skillful employees).

2. Pay or food. Employees would be paid for overtime or they are given enough nutritious food at work. A work day (12 hours) is much more effective if the employees are healthy. Besides, a worker works well with a full tummy.

3. Demand Proper Setting: Every hired factory worker should have at least proper housing and food (in those factories that have housing). A bed with in a small room with four others and sharing a bathroom with twenty others is not decent housing for a long time. People who live outside the factory should be granted food at least.  If work hours are long before the deadline, all employees provided with food, drink and breaks. Having a possibility for company health care is essential, especially if the factory handles less nice stuff.

Housing would cost, of course, but this is the setting I'd prefer: One apartment would house four employees (or a family), have one bedroom with bunk beds, a kitchen and a bathroom. The apartment building would have a space for social gatherings, seats, maybe a few posters. 40 apartments can fit easily and the building costs would be something similar to building a large house in the US. So, a factory owner could postpone their new Hampton's house or the wife's mercedes for a year and take care of the employees. If the company should close the unit in C/I/whatever, they could sell the building to the government for a nominal fee.

Now, the education part: Hiring  a teacher from the target country should be easy. India, for example, has quite many people with language skills and some education. Besides, the kids only need to learn to read, write and maybe do some calculus. Anyone can teach them, no need for certified teachers as long as the teacher speaks the kids' language. A meal at school is a very good reason for their parents to let their kids come to school.

Pay.. Pay is always difficult. I couldn't say how much a Chinese factory worker should earn, but It should be decent.. So, if a factory worker in Sweden earns 1400 euros a month plus healthcare and low cost meals at work, it would only be decent to pay the Chinese 350 euros and a meal. It's horrible to hear that they work overtime in poor conditions and earn a swedes' monthly pay in a year

It's horrible to hear that my jeans that I bought for 49 euros have been made by little chinese girls who earns the same amount by working 12 to 16 hours a day for a month. It's sick and it's cruel.

Friday

Summer's Gone

Aaaw, I just noticed there are so many yellow leaves already! That means the summer is gone, though I'm pretty sure it's still warm outside. I haven't been properly out for a week or two; I've gone out for groceries, not really for anything else. Been mostly playing Fallout 3 or Civ IV.

We have a new parrot, an agapornis roseicollis, and she's making my nerves crack. I'm not her numero uno human, and she's so letting me know I'm not the IT person for her. She sings very prettily, but tends to do these terrible screeks in the morning, if I don't go and turn the radio on for her. She's pretty, yellow and red and bites hard. How do you teach a bird not to bite you, anyway? You can't push her away not to make her fear your hand. She doesn't understand yelling at her.. There are days when I wish J woudn't have taken her at all, but most days she just keeps melting my heart over and over again.

For all my life, I have written these short stories, nothing fancy and more teen stuff than grown up stuff. I did this one story, over 70 pages and decided it was too crappy. Now I have a writer's block and it's killing me. I get nothing out. I wish I was natural, that words just came out me.. but nothing. I'm worthless, talentless and ugly. What more could go wrong?

I have applied for 23 positions in the last three weeks. Three replies, one interview, no job. I'm starting to hate this unemployment. Every month without a job makes the chance of getting work go further.
